World Wide Motorcycling
In 1884, Gottlieb Daimler designed and built
the Einspur which featured
wooden wheels, a petrol burning engine,
and two "wheeled" outriggers for
stability. This is considered the true father of all modern
motorcycles. The first motorcycles were literally bicycles fitted
with motors, and this style was popular for many years. In fact, in
1911 Ingaz Schwinn, the bicycle magnate, purchased the Excelsior
motorcycle company and took over production of the Excelsior name.
